I have enjoyed reading your blogs and lit reviews on utilizing African Indigenous Knowledge in a western setting. It is certainly a challenge, since western cultures tend to be individualistic in nature, while the mode in Africa tends to be communal. Your design incorporated essential tools like a communal meal and storytelling to bring that sense of community. I also appreciated your emphasis on developing a community project together. It seems you were cautious throughout to have the participants own the process, not the "program leaders." Thank you for brining this perspective to our class!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your blog program design. I am a strong believer in mentoring and tutoring so I was happy to see that you included it in your program for African Indigenous Knowledge. At the college where I teach, TRiO has been a major benefit to first generation college students. TRiO mission is to increase student retention and graduation rates, facilitate their transfer from two-year to four-year colleges, and foster an institutional climate supportive of the success of low-income and first-generation college students and individuals with disabilities. As a matter of fact, I am a TRIO mentor and have been for 2 years. These services are especially vital as the college is located and serves primarily a low-income community district. I have a special place in my heart as I too was a first generation college student in my family. Peer mentoring contributed significantly to my undergraduate academic success.
ReplyDeleteHi Group 5,
ReplyDeleteI very much enjoyed reading about your program design. I found the writing style and sequencing to be very effective! You provided a lot of information and yet the way you ordered the content it was quite manageable. Likewise, the style of your writing is very enjoyable and easy to read. I appreciated the fact that you included a schedule with highlights of topics and activities; this gives the reader a good sense of how the program will flow from one thing to the next. Also really like how you encapsulated the program detail within the ending table. This seems like such a nice program to tie in with the TRIO funded program. Very good idea to modify the Ubuntu to be fitting with the American culture/education system; I think it would work either way, but this modification makes the program have a more scholarly or academically appropriate level.
Take care now, Alexandra
What I like most about your program design(topic) is the fact that it is a group learning or community learning rather than an individual. It's not a way of saying you have to rely on some others but it is a way of learning to work together to get the job done and learn. All around, I thought the way your layout was put helped things flow nicely to where it was very understandable.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI think your program design is great. I really like the fact that you mentioned the purpose of the program will be to train a group of adult leaders who are able to take the information to their own communities to develop problem-solving community action groups using the principles of Ubuntu. It will create the community centered involvement that is so important in Ubuntu. Also great information.
Thank you,
Frances

ReplyDeleteThis is an excellent paper! Every part of the paper is well-written!
Very nice introduction!
Your Rational is clearly stated! I really like that you specifically pointed out the themes that you wanted to integrated into your program, which is very clear and precise and is very easy for your readers to follow!
The activities in each week are interesting and are relevant to the main ideas that you described in your themes.
I really like your suggestions! Thank you for sharing these tools with us!
Suggestions:
1. Before you introduce your program, I suggest that you use one or two sentences to state the reasons why you want to introduce these two programs. For example, you may say: In order to learn the specific strategies of how to apply the main ideas of Ubuntu such as XXX into the program we will design, we decided to investigate some programs which have implemented these ideas in their learning activities and borrow some strategies from them. XXX and XXX are two of such programs.
2. Week 1: from 6 pm to 9 pm, you don’t have break time.
3. Is this a credit based course? Or is this a training workshop for professionals? If it is a credit course, you need more information such as course policy, grading criteria, etc. If this is a training workshop, 12-week is probably too long for some learners. You probably can decrease to 6 times or less.
4. It is very hard to see the contents in the figure you listed.
5. Revise your APA formats and grammar. For example:
“Africans do not speak of education as a process or institutionseparate from everything else in life” (Tedla, 1992, pg. 7)
--- Check APA about direct citation.
