Survival Memo

After reading the EDAC 634 syllabus for the first time I have to admit that I freaked out a little bit! I thought that a 20+ page syllabus was a little overwhelming and had second thoughts about attempting this course. However, the syllabus soon became my best friend! As you can see, a lot the assignments in this course are based around one central topic. I recommend choosing whatever topic you actually find interesting because you will spend a lot of time working with this material and your group. My experience with group work in this course was great! Maintain good communication with your group members and define clear expectations about the tasks that you assign each other. Discussion boards are also an important part of this course. I had the best luck with working ahead in this area. I recommend getting these posts done well before the deadlines so that you can have time to commend accordingly on your classmates posts! Most of all I would say when in doubt about anything in the class, reaching out to Dr. Chang is your best bet! She responds to all emails and questions in a quick manner and clarifies any questions you have!
  1. ·         Begin early and do not procrastinate
  2. ·         Maintain open communication with your group members
  3. ·         Review APA before you start writing your assignments!
  4. ·         Read and print out your syllabus!
  5. ·         Make sure that you complete all aspects of the rubric for each assignment
  6. ·         Don’t be afraid of the new technology
  7. ·         Pick a topic that you actually like! You will be working with that material a lot for these assignments
  8. ·         Make sure that you pay attention to the rules of the discussion boards and make sure all posts are done on time!
  9. ·         Contact Dr. Chang with any questions! She is very helpful

  2. Dear Jessica and Group 5, Your survival memo is spot on. I have appreciated your individual and group work on African Indigenous Knowledge throughout the development of your Blog. I still haven't figured out how to create the little video like the one you show here. I was the techie of our group creating the Blog, Office Mix PowerPoint, and Website, but have yet to learn this aspect of making a video and posting it to the Blog. Would you mind telling me how you did this and wish media you chose? It appears that your group worked together with camaraderie and efficiency. I really appreciate that. Also, thank you all for your group member postings in our discussions. It has been a pleasure getting to know each of you during the semester. Have a wonderful summer. I look forward to seeing you again in future courses.

  3. Group 5,

Great survival memo! I think many of us in the course had a panic moment when we first saw the syllabus! I agree with all of your suggestions. I also really like the "Hello, I'm a survivor" graphic. I'm glad that your group worked efficiently together on the group project.

    Thanks,

    Jen

  4. Group 5 - you really hit on some key points in your survival memo, and I can think of none greater than being early and working ahead! Great advice! I had to chuckle a bit at the 'don't be afraid of new technology' comment - I'm still trying out how to work with a blog, and this is the second project where I've had to use this media. I would also add that open communication with group members is a must, and thanks for adding this. You simply cannot get this done with any quality without this aspect.

  5. I enjoyed your survival memo and video. You gave great tips on surviving the course and doing projects. I appreciate you saying don't be scared of the techonology and you were not also very formiliar with some. I was in the same boat. But my group did help me along the way and sometimes I just had to figure it out

    Thank you,

    Frances
